Best IPTV Apps, Ranked by the Guide You Scroll Every Evening

Every IPTV player shows the same channels from the same login. What differs is how quickly each one gets you from 25,000 of them to the program you want at 8 pm. So this ranking sets aside everything that is identical from app to app (the picture, the channel list, the subscription behind it) and judges each player on its guide: the grid you scroll, the catch-up you start from it, the favorites that shrink a vast list, and whether the listed times are right.

One thing first: a player on its own contains nothing. Install one before you have a login and it opens empty, which is how every one of them works. All the apps below accept a Zyminex account, because accounts use the ordinary Xtream Codes format, with an M3U link alongside for the apps that would rather have a playlist.

Five questions to put to any player’s guide

These are the tests applied to every app further down. They take about ten minutes on any device, and they are worth running during a free trial before you settle on anything.

1. Is there a real grid? Channels down one side, time across the top, hours ahead, with the channel you were watching still playing while you browse. A now-and-next strip under the picture is not the same thing.
2. Where do the listings come from? Guide data is XMLTV, served by the same server as your login. With an Xtream login most players fetch it without being asked; given a bare M3U link, some need the guide address pasted in separately.
3. Can you play earlier programs from it? Channels that keep an archive carry a small archive or clock icon. Choosing a program that has already aired should start it from the beginning.
4. Can 25,000 channels be made to feel like forty? Hiding groups you never open, starring favorites and searching by name are what turn the list into something you can use.
5. Are the times right? Listings should follow the device clock. If the guide runs an hour out, the device time zone is the first fix, and a guide time offset in the player, where there is one, the second.

The four IPTV players side by side

1. TiViMate: the guide worth planning an evening around

TiViMate is why people who start on a basic player end up buying a streaming stick just to run it. Its guide is a proper grid: channels down the left, hours across the top, and whatever you were watching carrying on in a corner while you scroll ahead to 10 pm to see what follows. You can look through a whole evening without losing the program in front of you.

Getting the listings in. Choose Add playlist, then Xtream Codes login, and enter the server address with its port, then the username and password. With an Xtream login TiViMate never asks for a separate guide address, because the listings travel with the account. It will ask which channel groups to include; untick the ones you will never open, knowing the choice can be changed later under Settings, then Playlists. Then, under Settings, TV guide, set the refresh interval to every 12 hours so tomorrow’s listings are in place before you look for them.

When a row says “No information”. Run Settings, TV guide, Update now, and restart the app. On a first load across a list this size, the guide may simply need longer than it has been given.

Catch-up and on demand. With the Xtream login, the catch-up and on-demand sections fill in without extra configuration, and archived programs start from the guide itself: scroll back along a channel’s row to something that aired at 7 and play it. That is the most natural place for catch-up to live.

Premium. The free tier covers one playlist and ordinary viewing. Premium, which has a seven-day trial, unlocks recording, multi-view and extra playlists. It costs about $9.99 a year; a lifetime license, bought once, sits in the mid-$30s. You pay for it on your phone, in a separate app called TiViMate Companion, not from the television, and that is the step most people get stuck on. Bear in mind that multi-view plays each channel on screen as its own stream, so two side by side need a plan with two streams.

The limit. TiViMate is Android-only. There is no version for Apple, Samsung or LG, and apps with similar names in those stores are made by unrelated developers. On a Fire TV Stick it is sideloaded with Downloader, as the Firestick guide shows; on Android TV and Google TV it installs from the Play Store. Every step is in the TiViMate setup guide.

2. IPTV Smarters Pro: one guide on every screen in the house

Smarters ranks second on the guide and first on reach. Android, Fire TV, Samsung and LG (where it is listed as IPTV Smarters), iPhone, iPad and Apple TV (as IPTV Smarters Player), Windows and Mac: the same three credentials work on all of them, and it costs nothing on any of them. There is no paid tier either. The developer’s business is building branded versions for providers, and the public app has always been free.

Getting the listings in. Pick Login with Xtream Codes API rather than the M3U route, enter the three values exactly as they were sent, and let it download channels, films and listings. Give the guide a few minutes on the first run before judging it. Then open Settings, EPG and switch on “Enable EPG on live TV”, so the listings stay on screen alongside whatever is playing.

Living with it. The guide does its job, but it is plainer than TiViMate’s and the interface has aged. What Smarters offers instead is sameness: someone who knows it from the living-room television can find their way round it on a phone on the train. In a house with three kinds of device, that is worth a great deal.

Two settings and one message. Under Settings, Player settings, choose the built-in player with hardware decoding. If a single channel stutters while the rest behave, switch only that channel to software decoding from the player menu. And “Your account is expired” means the term has ended, not that the app is broken: renew, and the same login works again. More in the Smarters guide.

3. Smart IPTV: a guide that arrives by web upload

Smart IPTV (you will also see it as SIPTV) is made with Samsung and LG sets in mind, and it is the lightest of the four, which is why it stays responsive on sets whose processors labor with anything heavier. It has no login screen. The television shows its own MAC address; on a phone or laptop you open siptv.app/mylist, type that MAC exactly, colons and all, paste your M3U link, tick “Keep online” and press Send. Restart the app and the channels and guide load from the playlist.

What that means for the guide. Smart IPTV works from the M3U link rather than the Xtream login, and catch-up is most dependable through the login, so treat it as a player for watching live from the guide rather than for rewinding the evening. It also holds one playlist at a time.

Costs and quirks. Seven days are free, then a small one-time activation for that particular set is paid at siptv.app/activation, to the app’s developer and not to us. The stored list does not survive a reinstall of the app or a reset of the television, and that is the usual reason for a “playlist expired” message; upload it again against the same MAC. It is easily confused with SSIPTV, a separate app from a different developer that can take a link directly on the television. Either works with Zyminex; use whichever your TV’s store actually stocks.

4. IBO Player: put it through the five questions first

IBO Player is another television app that runs free for a trial period and then charges a small fee per TV. Like the Smart IPTV activation, that fee goes to the app’s developer and is separate from your subscription. Because you pay per set, the trial is the time to be thorough: load your list, open the guide at the hour you normally watch, and work through the five questions at the top of this page. If the grid is readable from the sofa, the times match your clock and the favorites survive a restart, it has earned its fee. If not, IPTV Smarters costs nothing on the same television. The rest of the shelf

• iPlayTV runs on iPhone, iPad and Apple TV for a one-off price. It is the best-looking choice on Apple hardware, and the one to pay for if most of your viewing happens on an Apple TV.
• GSE Smart IPTV runs on iOS and Android. Its switchable decoding engines occasionally rescue a channel that refuses to play anywhere else, which makes it a useful second app.
• VLC is free on nearly everything. Open the M3U link and a channel is playing within moments, so it is the quickest way to confirm an account works. It is a media player rather than a guide, though, and no way to spend an evening.
• Kodi reads the M3U link through its IPTV Simple Client, and is one of the players that wants the guide address supplied separately.

Apple hardware allows no sideloading, so everything there comes from the App Store. If a channel list loads but a stream will not play, switching the player engine to VLC or FFmpeg in the app’s settings usually sorts it; the Apple guide has the rest.

Xtream login or M3U link?

Where a player offers both, give it the Xtream login. The three values, a server address with its port, a username and a password, bring the guide and the on-demand library in automatically, and catch-up is at its most reliable this way. The M3U link, shaped like http://server:port/get.php with your username and password attached, is there for players that only understand playlists, Smart IPTV, VLC and Kodi among them. Those sometimes need the guide supplied on its own: the same server address ending in xmltv.php, with your credentials attached, which support sends on request. Ten minutes that improve any of them

• Hide what you will never watch. Whole country groups can go in a minute, and the guide gets shorter and easier to move through with each one.
• Star a shortlist. Thirty or forty favorites is a sensible target. Open the guide on favorites and a whole evening fits on two screens.
• Let it refresh before you judge it. A guide that looks half empty ten minutes after the first login is usually still downloading.
• Check the clock once. If the 9 pm film is listed at 8 or 10, fix the device’s time zone before blaming the listings.

What to install tonight

Any of them can be tried on the 24-hour free trial. The same login works in several apps at once, so installing two and comparing their guides on the same evening costs nothing; only simultaneous playback is limited, and that is set by the plan, not the app. Hardware is covered in the box guide.
