1. Decide between a login and a playlist upload

   On an LG the choice of player is really a choice of how your account arrives. IPTV Smarters Player takes the Xtream login, and with it the guide, catch-up and the on-demand library, fetched by the app itself; it is free, and it is where most LG owners should start. Smart IPTV takes your M3U link instead, uploaded against the television's MAC address from a phone or laptop. It is lean and very stable once set up, asks a small one-time fee when its trial ends, and is weak at catch-up, because a bare M3U carries the archive unreliably. Other players come and go in the LG Content Store by region and model year, so look at the store on your own set before paying for one. Ignore anything named TiviMato or Tivimax: neither is TiViMate, which has no LG version at all.

2. Check the webOS version and the LG account

   The players need webOS 3.0 or later, which every LG from 2016 onward has. Sign in to your LG account on the television before going to the store, since downloads need it. If your set is older than 2016, stop here and read the problems section: the store will not offer these players, and a stick is the better route for that screen.

3. Find the player in the LG Content Store

   Press Home, then open the Content Store and head for Apps; the search field is there. Type IPTV Smarters Player, Smart IPTV or the paid player you settled on, then install and open it. Smart IPTV's first screen shows the television's MAC address. Take a photo of it, because you will type it on another device in a moment and every character counts.

4. Sign in, or upload the playlist

   In Smarters, pick the Xtream Codes API login and complete the server URL, with http:// before it and the port number after the colon, then the username and password exactly as sent, capitals included. For Smart IPTV, go to siptv.app/mylist on a phone or laptop, enter the MAC address from the television, colons and all, add the M3U link from your activation message and send it. Then close the app on the television and start it again, since a fresh start is when Smart IPTV collects a newly sent playlist.

5. Let the guide load, then show it over the picture

   The first sign-in downloads the channel list, then the guide data, which is the larger part and the slower one on a television. Give it several minutes and avoid changing channels while it works. When it has finished, look in the player's settings for the option that shows guide information over live TV and switch it on, so the current and next programs appear each time you change channel. On most evenings that small banner is the part of the guide you use most.

6. Set the decoder before judging a channel

   LG sets differ in which video formats they decode themselves. If a channel gives you sound over a black picture, the channel is working and the television is failing to decode its video. Open the player's settings, switch between the native or hardware decoder and the software one, and try the channel again. Most sports channels also come in a lower-bitrate version in the same group, which older sets play more comfortably.

7. Build a favorites list, then use the pointer

   Add the channels you actually watch to favorites, 30 to 40 is plenty, and open the guide from that group rather than from the full list. On a television this pays twice: fewer rows to read means fewer rows to draw, so the guide opens faster. With the Magic Remote, point at a program instead of stepping to it and use the scroll wheel for long lists, where the app supports them. On the standard remote, keep the favorites group short enough to cross in a few presses.

8. Check tonight on the grid

   Open the guide on your favorites. Choose a channel whose evening you know and compare the listing in the 8 pm slot with what is actually on; an hour's difference means the television's clock needs attention, covered below. Move ahead to 11 pm and make sure the listings continue. Then find a channel with the archive or clock icon, step back to a program that ended earlier tonight and play it from the start. In Smart IPTV, if that last check fails, the answer is Smarters with the Xtream login rather than more settings.

Problems we see on this one

The guide still shows this morning's listings

webOS keeps recently used apps suspended in the background, so a player you opened this morning can wake up this evening holding the guide it had then. Close it fully and reopen it so it fetches fresh listings, and if the player offers a guide refresh or update in its settings, run it once. If the same stale grid comes back every evening, unplug the television for a minute to clear whatever it is keeping in memory.

Programs appear an hour early or late

Start with the television, not the app, because the player converts guide times using the set's own clock. In the general settings, find the time and date options, choose automatic if the clock is currently set by hand, and confirm the time zone. A manual clock does not follow the change to or from daylight saving time, which is when this fault usually begins. Restart the player afterwards, and touch a time offset inside the player only if the television already shows the correct time.

The guide crawls on an early webOS set

An early webOS set has an older processor, and a guide for 25,000+ channels is heavy work for it. Open the guide from your favorites rather than the full list, avoid pressing through it while it is still drawing, and if it stays slow, try Smart IPTV, which asks less of the hardware. A Fire TV Stick in a free HDMI input, at $30 to $50, gives the same television a quicker guide.

The store has none of these players

Sets from before 2016 run webOS versions older than 3.0, and the players in this guide need 3.0 or later, so the store does not offer them. What each country's store lists also varies. Nothing in your account needs changing. The practical answer is a Fire TV Stick or an Android TV box in one of the television's HDMI inputs, which brings TiViMate and its full guide to the same screen.

The playlist went to the other LG in the house

Every television has its own MAC address, and Smart IPTV files your upload under the one you typed. Set up the bedroom first and the living room second, and it is easy to send the living-room playlist to the bedroom MAC. Open Smart IPTV on the set that is still empty, read its MAC from the screen, and upload the M3U link against that address. Each television also needs its own Smart IPTV activation once the trial ends.
