Recording IPTV From the Guide: Drives, Schedules and When to Skip It

Recording IPTV From the Guide: Drives, Schedules and When to Skip It

To record IPTV you need three things: a player that records, somewhere to put the files, and a stream free while the recording runs. On Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV that normally means TiViMate Premium writing to a USB drive or a folder on your home network, with recordings set from the TV guide. Before buying any of it, check whether the channel keeps a catch-up archive, because a program you only want to watch tomorrow may not need recording at all.

This guide covers how to record IPTV in TiViMate step by step, what the other players can and cannot do, how much space an hour takes at HD, FHD and 4K, and the handful of reasons a recording comes out empty or an hour wrong.

What a recording setup needs

  • A recording player. TiViMate Premium, paid for through TiViMate Companion on your phone: roughly $9.99 per year, or a one-time lifetime purchase in the mid-$30s. Premium has a seven-day trial of its own.
  • Storage. A USB drive on a box with a USB port, or a shared folder on a computer or network drive.
  • A spare stream. A recording is one stream; watching something else at the same time is a second.
  • A guide with the right times. Recordings start and stop by the listings, so a grid that is an hour out records the wrong hour.

Record it, or let catch-up keep it?

Catch-up and recording overlap more than people expect, and catch-up costs nothing to set up. Run through these three questions for each program you are thinking of recording.

  1. Does the channel carry the archive icon? If it does and you will watch within the archive window, catch-up already has it. See how catch-up works for reading that window in the guide.
  2. Do you want to keep it? The archive drops old days as new ones arrive. A film for the grandchildren’s visit next month, or a whole season to watch in one go, belongs on your own drive.
  3. Is the channel without an archive? Then recording is the only way to play it later.

In practice the list tends to be short: a weekly series on a channel without an archive, the occasional film to keep, and the weekend game played while you were at work.

How to record IPTV in TiViMate

TiViMate records from the guide, which makes it the natural choice for anyone who already plans evenings in the grid. The free tier does not record; Premium does. Set it up once and the rest happens from the TV guide.

  1. Buy or trial Premium on your phone. Install TiViMate Companion, buy or start the Premium trial there, then sign in to the same TiViMate account in the app on the television. The television cannot take the payment itself, which is the step that catches most people out.
  2. Connect the storage. Plug the USB drive into the box, or have the address, username and password of the network folder ready.
  3. Choose where recordings go. TiViMate’s settings have a recording section where you pick the folder. Point it at the USB drive or add the network folder there, not at internal storage.
  4. Record a program from the guide. Open the TV guide, move to a program that has not started yet, select it and choose Record from its options. It is marked in the grid as scheduled.
  5. Record what is on now. The same option on the program currently airing starts a recording from this moment. The minutes already broadcast are not included; on an archive channel, catch-up has those.
  6. Check the Recordings section. TiViMate’s main menu lists scheduled and finished recordings, and finished ones play from there.
  7. Add a margin if your version offers one. Broadcasts rarely keep to the listed second, so a few extra minutes before the start and after the end save the last scene of a film that overran.

Our TiViMate setup guide covers the install and login that come before all of this. On a Fire TV Stick, the Firestick guide shows the sideload with Downloader.

USB drive, network folder or internal storage

  • USB drive. The simplest choice on Android TV boxes, Nvidia Shield and Formuler boxes, which have full-size USB ports. A portable hard drive or SSD suits long-term storage better than a small memory stick. If the drive is formatted FAT32, no single file can be larger than 4 GB, a ceiling a long 4K recording can reach; exFAT avoids it on devices that read exFAT.
  • Network folder. A shared folder on an always-on computer or a network storage drive. It keeps the files off the TV device altogether, and every player on the network can reach them. The catch is bandwidth: the stream arrives and the recording leaves over the same connection, so on Wi-Fi a recording competes with whatever you are watching. Ethernet on the recording device helps more than anything else.
  • Internal storage. Fine for a ten-minute test. Streaming sticks and most boxes have little free space, and filling it slows the device down.

Fire TV Sticks deserve a note: their only port is for power, so recording on one means a network folder or an OTG adapter that adds a USB port. If recording is the reason you are choosing hardware, a box with a real USB port is the less fiddly route, and the box guide compares them.

How much space an hour of IPTV takes

File size follows the channel’s bitrate. The conversion is simple: multiply the bitrate in megabits per second by 0.45 and you have gigabytes per hour. The figures below are approximate industry guidance, not measurements of any particular channel. Fast-moving sports usually sit at the top of each range, studio talk at the bottom.

Quality Typical bitrate Per hour, roughly A two-hour film Ten one-hour episodes
HD 3 to 5 Mbps 1.4 to 2.3 GB 3 to 5 GB 14 to 23 GB
FHD 5 to 8 Mbps 2.3 to 3.6 GB 5 to 7 GB 23 to 36 GB
4K 15 to 25 Mbps 7 to 11 GB 14 to 22 GB 70 to 110 GB

So a 128 GB drive holds roughly 35 to 55 hours of FHD, or 12 to 18 hours of 4K. Two habits stretch it a long way. Many busy channels come in 4K, FHD and HD, and recording the FHD or HD version of a program you will watch once on a bedroom set cuts the file to a third of the 4K size or less. And deleting what you have watched, from the Recordings section, keeps the drive from filling on the night it matters. To know your own figures, record one hour of a channel you watch and look at the file size.

Scheduling recordings from the guide

A scheduled recording is only as good as the listing it follows, and the device has to be ready when the listing says go.

  • Check the times first. If the grid is an hour out, the recording is too. Setting the device’s time zone by region, not by a fixed offset, is the fix in most cases; our page on a blank or wrong guide covers the rest.
  • Schedule a few days ahead at most. The guide usually reaches several days out, so a weekly series is set episode by episode as each one appears in the grid.
  • Leave the device able to wake. Standby is usually fine; off at the wall is not. Schedule a ten-minute test recording, put the television into standby, and check the result before trusting it with a final.
  • Count your streams. On a one-stream plan, a recording running at 9 pm means nothing else can play on the account at 9 pm. Two recordings at once plus live viewing needs three.

Recording in IPTV Smarters Pro and other players

IPTV Smarters Pro. Depending on the version and platform, Smarters on Android phones, tablets and some TV boxes shows a record option in the player that saves to the device’s own storage. It records what you are watching from that point on; do not count on guide-based scheduling to match TiViMate’s. On Samsung, LG and Apple devices, plan on no recording at all and use catch-up instead. The Smarters guide covers the rest of the app.

Smart IPTV. A lightweight player for Samsung and LG sets without a recording feature. Use catch-up on archive channels.

Formuler boxes. MyTVOnline can record to a USB drive on many models. Ask support on WhatsApp for the steps on yours if the option is not obvious.

A computer. VLC can record whatever it is playing from the M3U link, using the record button among its advanced controls. It is a manual method with no scheduling, useful in a pinch rather than as a daily habit.

When a recording goes wrong

What happened Likely reason What to change
The file is empty or a few seconds long No stream was free when it started Stop other screens, or move to a plan with one more stream
It recorded the hour before Guide times off by an hour Fix the device time zone, refresh the guide
It ends before the program does The broadcast overran its listing Add an end margin; on archive channels, play the rest from catch-up
It stops at about 4 GB A FAT32-formatted drive Reformat as exFAT, after copying off anything you need
Nothing was recorded at all Device off, drive unplugged, or Premium lapsed Test with a short scheduled recording
Playback stutters from a network folder Wi-Fi carrying the stream and the file at once Ethernet on the recording device

If a recording keeps failing on one channel while others record fine, send support the channel name, the time and a photo of the error on WhatsApp; someone answers around the clock.

Try the whole setup before paying for either

TiViMate Premium has its own seven-day trial, and Zyminex has a 24-hour free trial, so a recording setup can be tested end to end before any money changes hands: schedule something from tonight’s guide, let it run, and play it back tomorrow. If recording while someone watches is the plan, look at two streams on the pricing page: $25 for a month or $119 for a year, against $15 and $69 for one.

Questions readers send us about this

Can I record IPTV without TiViMate Premium?

On Android TV and Fire TV, TiViMate's free tier does not record, so Premium is the usual route. Alternatives exist but are more limited: some Android versions of IPTV Smarters Pro can record what is playing to the device, Formuler boxes can record in MyTVOnline on many models, and VLC on a computer can record manually. For programs on archive channels, catch-up often makes a recording unnecessary.

Can I record two IPTV channels at the same time?

Yes, if the player supports it and your plan has the streams. Each recording is a stream in its own right, so two simultaneous recordings need a two-stream plan, and watching a third channel while both run needs three. On a one-stream plan, schedule recordings for times when nobody is watching anything else on the account.

Can I record IPTV on a Samsung or LG smart TV?

Generally not with the apps those televisions run. IPTV Smarters and Smart IPTV on Samsung and LG sets are players rather than recorders. Use catch-up for channels that keep an archive, or add an Android TV box or a Fire TV Stick with TiViMate Premium if recording matters to you.

How big a USB drive do I need for IPTV recordings?

As a rough guide, an hour of FHD takes about 2.3 to 3.6 GB and an hour of 4K about 7 to 11 GB. A 128 GB drive therefore holds roughly 35 to 55 hours of FHD. If you keep whole seasons or record a lot of 4K, a portable hard drive of 1 TB or more is the more comfortable choice.

Why did my IPTV recording start late or miss the ending?

Recordings follow the times in the guide, and broadcasts drift. A program that started a few minutes late or overran its slot will be clipped unless the recording has a margin. Add a few minutes before and after if your player allows it, and check the guide's times against the clock; an hour-out guide records the wrong hour entirely.

Can I record a program that has already started?

Yes, but the recording begins at the moment you press record, not at the program's start. On a channel with the archive icon, the missed opening can be played from catch-up, and many viewers simply watch the whole program from the archive instead of recording it.

Look up tonight on your own screen first

A 24-hour trial opens the full guide on the device you already use. When you do pay, terms start at $15 and the login comes through in under 15 minutes.
